It has been revealed that Stonehaven Open Air Pool may not open in time for the start of the summer tourist season. The one-of-a-kind open-air pool built in the 1930’s traditionally opens for business on the last weekend of May.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched an investigation in February after a man was hurt after falling from scaffolding, he was working for the group that maintains the exterior of the pool, Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool. The man has since fully recovered.
Aberdeenshire Council maintains the pool and is responsible for safety in and around the building. Recent reports have suggested that it was the HSE which has caused delays, meaning that essential maintenance to the pool mechanisms could not be carried out leading to the knock-on effect of delaying the Friends from completing their renovation works.
The Stonehaven Open Air Pool website currently still lists the opening time as “late May 2018” but the council is expected to make a statement in the coming days delaying the official opening date.
