The Waterfront Cafe reopened on Monday after an extensive renovation to repair flood damage.
On the 19th of September, a leak in the above Indian Restaurant Soul and Spice caused significant damage to the premises. Emergency services were called, but not before the water had leaked down into the Waterfront Cafe below. Owners Susan and Martin Knowles shared photos of the damage and the subsequent repair work on Facebook.
Frequently lauded as one of Stonehaven’s best cafes it has seen A-list celebrities among its customers including Benedict Cumberbatch who visited in December 2016 and posed for photos with staff and customers.
On Monday the 22nd of October after almost 5 weeks of renovation, the cafe reopened to a busy Monday morning.
Speaking to the Evening Express about the incident, Susan said: “I got a call around 7.50am and was told that our alarm was going off and that water could be seen coming in.
“There were four pumps from the fire brigade, I believe two from Stonehaven and two from Altens who helped us by pumping out the water.
“We found two holes in the roof and because of all the water our laminate flooring had become warped.
“It was awful. I was in tears as no-one deserves to go through something like this.
“We were devastated at what happened, we had to speak to the staff and tell them that we would be closed and would have no idea when we would be open again.
“We are delighted and reopened to a full house in the morning.
“We didn’t have a grand opening but we had some balloons and let one of our regulars cut the ribbon for our first day back.
“We just want to thank all the tradesmen who helped us and to our staff and customers who have stuck by us through all this.
“Our staff were in with us over the weekend cleaning everything.
“As there were some workmen in, there was a bit of dust so we cleaned everything before opening again.”
